Youtiful slimline backpack

(4 customer reviews)

Youtiful is a slimline backpack that – by changing the straps – can easily be used as a backpack, crossbody, or shoulder bag. The pattern can be sewn using a wide variety of fabric/material choices such as cotton, upholstery fabric, decorator fabric, canvas (waxed or unwaxed), cork, thin leather, or denim.

All bags pictured are sewn on domestic machines.

You get a pdf pattern with diagrams and pictures for every step. This pattern is written with imperial and metric measurements.
You get full patterns pieces (no cut on the fold) and even separate pattern pieces for interfacing and stabilizer.

  1. This bag does not have a traditional lining. The pockets act as the inside of the bag. Since my patterns are written for people with domestic machines, do not use anything thicker than cotton for the pockets.
You can blockfuse the woven interfacing and the cotton for pieces A, B, C and D.
  2. For this bag, it’s important you keep your stabilizer out of the SA. For that reason, there are separate pattern pieces for the stabilizer. Keep the Sandwich Fix, Decovil Light or Fusible fleece out of your SA. All seam allowances (SA) are 3/8” unless otherwise stated.
  3. You can make this bag out of cork, pleather, waxed canvas, corduroy, upholstery fabric, decorator fabric, jeans, microsuede or quilting cotton.
  4. You only need to use the woven interfacing if you are using quilting cotton.
  5. Do use the Decovil Light, Sandwich fix or Fusible fleece for all other materials.

  • 1/2 yard/meter 44” wide exterior fabric (front and back panel and straps)
  • 1/4 yard/meter 44” wide contrasting fabric (bottom gusset and connector tabs)
  • 1/2 yard/meter44” wide quilting weight lining fabric

or 1 yard/meter 44” wide fusible woven interfacing (like wovenfuse, Vilene G700, plakdoek)
  • 1/2 yard/meter 18” wide Decovil Light
    or FQ Sandwich fix
or 1/2 yard/meter 36” wide fusible fleece interfacing (like Pellon Thermolam TP971F or Vlieseline H640)

Zipper and hardware

  • 10” (26cm) all-purpose zipper #3 or #5 (back zippered pocket)
  • 8 1/2” (22cm) all-purpose zipper #3 (recessed front pocket; handbag zipper not recommended)
  • Four rivets (the thickness of your fabric will tell you what size rivet you need)

Tools and notions

  • Double Sided Tape (attaching the zippers)
  • Fabric glue (Beacon Fabri-tac) (optional)
  • (Erasable) marking pen

For the straps:

  • Four 1” rectangle rings (connectors)

  • Two 1” rectangle rings (top connectors)
  • Two 1” D-rings (bottom connectors)
  • Two 1” swivel clips

First serial bagmakers purchase. I haven’t have a chance to make one up yet but the directions are very clear. I just hope my kids like the look of this bag as much as I do.

I haven't gotten a chance to make this up yet, but the instructions are clear and I think it will be a fun sew. I'm hoping to make 1 up for each of my 2 grandnieces as gifts later this year. It was just what I was looking for.

This is a fantastic bag, and I love that instructions are included to turn it into a cross-body. Also, I really appreciate how clear the instructions are. Thank you for another great pattern. I think I know what everyone is getting for Christmas this year!
